Abstract

This article describes the improvement and career development at the Department of Public Works and Spatial Planning of West Kutai Regency. The
method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection procedures were carried out through observation and in-depth interviews.
Informants in this study were: head, secretary, head of division, head of sub-section and staff at the Department of Public Works and Spatial Planning
of West Kutai Regency. Data analysis techniques were interactive models consisting of: data collection, data reduction, data presentation and drawing
conclusions. This study reveals the following findings: 1) Career development is implemented and developed in the human resources of the government
employees through career development and assessment of work performance systems. Generally, the career system is through promotion, transfer of
position and promotion (appointment to another position). 2) Government employee career improvement and development strategies are based on
competence by taking into account: work productivity, efficiency, avoiding damage, reducing employee accident rates, service, moral, career, conceptual
and leadership, 3) Application of assessment center strategy was used in recruitment, selection, development, promotion, to prepare the succession
path of government employees.
